California's central coast is a region where the mountains drop off sharply to sea level. It has been called one of the most dramatic meetings of land and sea in the world.
Paul Theroux wrote, "At this height, almost the only sound is the wind in the redwoods, and Big Sur looks rugged and unscalable. I have never seen another place in the world like it. Its ridges and promontories inspire mingled feelings of peace and power and health, an almost trance-like state of being washed in air and light."
Largely undeveloped, the area has a moderate climate. Average temperatures range between 60-85 degrees in summer, and 50-70 degrees in winter. Most of the area's rainfall occurs between November and March, with relatively warm weather between rains.
